Basin 1 & 2 - Battery Energy Storage Building

Basic Specification:

General Contractor:  PCL Constructors
Location:  Toronto, Ontario
Stage: Complete
Construction Method:  Design Build

Building System:  Integrated Steel Framing

Services Rendered:  Design & Supply Integrated Framing and Insulated Panel

General Description:

After completing a lunch & learn for PCL management staff, Mario was asked if he could attend a meeting with Agile which is PCL's modular building division.  He was told that Agile was looking for help with a modular design where the structure was  running well over the budget.  Mario was able to propose a design which not only was within the budget but would simplify the off-site and on-site constructability of the design.

Because PCL was relying on staff which was not familiar with integrated steel systems or insulated panel installation, Mario arranged for initial training and periodic inspections to insure the design was adhered too and the insulated panel was installed as per the custom details developed by Mario.  As a result, the modules were constructed in a controlled environment and successfully shipped to the site where they were fitted together to create 2 - independent structures.

Insulated panel was used for the roof and wall assembly which met the SB-10 thermal requirements.  Mario recommended insulated panel because of its durability and ease of installation.  As well, insulated panel has a proven ability to regulate the interior temperature which was crucial on this project because of the intense heat created by the battery systems.

Design Highlights:
  • The framing was a combination of I-beams, 4" HSS and cold formed steel which maximized the strength of the modules while minimizing un-useable space.
  • Each Building was made up of 7 - modules which were placed on steel piles on-site.
  •  The roofing assembly is a 5" thick, standing seam insulated panel which met the SB-10 thermal requirements.  A custom detail was developed at the module ends to form an expandable, water tight seam.
  • The wall assembly is a combination of 5" (2 hr. fire rated) and 4" insulated panel.
